Four Stars for Mary Higgins Clark’s novel, “I Heard That Song Before.”

I have come to enjoy Clark’s novels again, having read some many years ago. She writes a mystery, throwing in all sorts of red herrings and keeping the reader on the edge as to “who really done it!”
In this novel, Kay Harrington, whose father once worked for the wealthy Carrington family, returns to the Carrington estate 22 years after her father was fired from there. She’d been told by her grandmother that her father was fired because of his drinking. While at the estate on her father’s final day of work, Kay heard a conversation that now comes back to haunt her.
Kay’s purpose for approaching Peter Carrington was to solicit the use of his house for a fundraiser to support literacy. As she was about to give up on a positive answer, Peter agreed. The two also became smitten with each other and after a whirlwind romance of five weeks, they married.
Now, the story gets serious. Peter has always been under a dark cloud, having been a suspect in the murder of a friend, Susan Althorp, and even moreso after Peter’s pregnant wife was found floating in their pool.
The Crown Prosecutor was like a dog without a bone, determined to prosecute Peter, thinking he’d gotten away with murder. She pushed even harder when Susan’s dying mother hired a private detective who tracked down a maid who had worked for the Carringtons, and the maid changed her story about a key piece of evidence.
I shall say no more. Clark throws suspicion on so many people, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, she changes lanes again. This book is well worth a few hours of entertaining reading, so curl up for the ride and enjoy.
