There’s something uniquely comforting about a local book event, the hum of conversation, the quiet turning of pages, and the feeling that stories bring people together in a way nothing else can. Last weekend’s Christmas Book Market & Open House may not have been bustling with crowds, but it was rich in the things that matter most: genuine connection, joyful conversation, and moments that remind us why we write, read, and share stories.

Whether one person walked through the door or twenty, each visit carried meaning and each reader left with a book chosen just for them.

Small Events, Big Heart

Yes, it was a quieter weekend.
But “quiet” isn’t the same as “unsuccessful.”

We shared stories, chatted with neighbours, signed books, and introduced both new and longtime readers to Canadian authors they may not have otherwise discovered. We even had the honour of welcoming special guest R.M. Burthom, whose presence brought an extra spark of inspiration to the event.

Every reader who came made the experience personal and memorable. When someone picks up a book and says, “This one is calling to me,” it reminds us why events like this matter.

The Gift of Local Literature

One of the most meaningful takeaways from the weekend was this:
People truly want to support local authors — they just need to know where to find them.

Whether guests were browsing children’s books, YA novels, mysteries, short stories, or horror novels,  there was a genuine excitement about discovering books written right here in our community.

Local literature matters.
It keeps Canadian stories alive, supports the arts, and connects readers with voices they may never encounter on a big-box shelf.

Why These Moments Matter

When a child picks up Why the Markers Cried and giggles at the idea of crying markers…
When a teen connects with What About Hailey? because the themes feel real and familiar…
When an adult finds themselves drawn into the mystery of Night’s Children

Those moments stay with us.

Events like this, big or small, remind us that every story has a reader, every reader has a journey, and every journey starts with a single book.

Looking Ahead

This quiet, cozy event reminded us that meaningful moments don’t always come in big numbers. Sometimes they’re found in small conversations, shared stories, and the simple joy of connecting with a reader who finds the exact book they needed.

And as we move into the holiday season, we’re excited to create even more opportunities to share stories, uplift Canadian voices, and celebrate the magic of reading together.
