FROM THE HEART A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES TO WARM YOUR HEART Mary’s short stories are a fictional smorgasbord, with a twist of real life in them. From something as simple as a child’s shoe on the road, which produced the story of “Rodney,” to a joke between Mary and her husband about the necessity of having a cat, which produced the story “Oh, Henry,” to some of her parent’s misadventures, which produced stories like: “The Graveyard” and “Remember When,” to a more serious side of Mary as she wrote such stories as “Sahar” for Remembrance Day. Mary’s stories have warmth and humour to them that will make you want to keep returning for more. Written by Mary M. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
I decided to write “Hope’s Merry-Go-Round” several years ago, and it has had several different starts.
Why did I write this story? I wrote it because I deplore the sexual abuse of children. I wrote it because I once read an article in the newspaper about sibling abuse, and it struck me, at the time, it was an abuse seldom talked about. Society zeros in on parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, neighbours, clergy, strangers, etc., but not siblings.
I used these characters to demonstrate the different paths victims can take in life––Hope uses the abuse she suffered at the hands of her brother to become promiscuous and blames it for everything that goes wrong in her life. Laurie also suffered sexual abuse as a child from her father and grandfather; however, Laurie took a different route and decided she would spend her life helping others deal with their trauma.
To be clear, “Hope’s Merry-Go-Round” is a work of fiction; however, it is based on a reality in our world. Some of the scenarios in Hope’s early years were taken from my own experiences; some are loosely similar, and some are real. However, the sexual abuses dealt with in this story are fiction. Please read this story with an open mind. If you have experienced sexual abuse, know there is light at the end of the tunnel. You are not alone. Embrace life and live it because you are so worth it!
Sincerely,
Mary M. Cushnie-Mansour, Your Writer on the Run -
"Time's Memories" holds recollections within its pages that we should never forget. Mirella has combined heart-warming short stories, a section of comedic incidents in a retirement home, and snippets of war memories from those who lived during such times. Mirella hopes the war memories shared here will open the eyes to the un-glory of war. She also hopes the readers will have a chuckle over the retirement home incidents. Not all in life is bleak, and Mirella has kept her faith in God, even during life's darkest hours. Written By Mirella Coacci van der Zyl Edited by Mary M. Cushnie-Mansour
